Jade Charon
Jade “Charon” Robertson is an interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, filmmaker, author, and educator whose work bridges dance, film, technology, and community-centered healing practices. Rooted in a spiritually grounded framework, her work centers Black women’s testimonies, ancestral memory, and transformation, exploring how storytelling and embodiment function as technologies for connection and spiritual elevation.
Robertson is an Associate Professor of Dance at The City University of New York (CUNY) and is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Dance Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds an MFA in Dance from the University of California, Los Angeles and a BA in Dance and Theater from Columbia College Chicago.
Her work has been presented nationally and internationally at venues including The Kaye Playhouse Theater, BAM Fisher, Bill T. Jones/New York Live Arts, BAAD! (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance), Gibney Performance Space, and The School at Jacob’s Pillow, with additional presentations in Los Angeles and Milwaukee. As a filmmaker, her dance films have screened at festivals including the Pan African Film Festival, Dance Camera West, Cannes World Film Festival, Vancouver Black Independent Film Festival, and the Toronto International Women’s Festival.
A recipient of numerous fellowships—including the Dancing While Black Fellowship, the Bill T. Jones/New York Live Arts Fresh Tracks Residency, and the Ann & Weston Hicks Choreography Fellowship at Jacob’s Pillow, Baba Chuck Davis Emerging Choreographer Fellowship from Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)—Robertson’s work continues to expand the boundaries of performance and interdisciplinary practice.
She is also a published scholar, with work appearing in Public Humanities, The Dancer-Citizen, and the Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences Research, with additional scholarship forthcoming in Research in Dance Education. Her research focuses on dance, technology, and social justice, particularly within under-resourced and predominantly Black educational spaces.
Robertson is the author of the children’s book Gold: Made Just for You (2021), extending her creative research into storytelling that affirms identity, self-worth, and belonging.
She is the founder of By Jade Charon, a nonprofit organization that produces the Restore Arts Festival, an interdisciplinary platform supporting women of color choreographers and filmmakers. She also founded The Gem Project, a mentorship initiative for girls of color, and created 3011 by Jade Charon, a body-positive dancewear line designed to support dancers of all body types.
Across performance, film, scholarship, and community practice, Jade Charon continues to create transformative spaces where art serves as a conduit for healing, connection, and awakening.
